Worksheets: Yea or Nay?

Drawing from everything that I have recently learnt about education I can assume that worksheets are a teaching tool of the past. My own personal elementary school experience led to the use of many worksheets. So what do I think about worksheets now?

My perfectionistic personality traits enjoy the organizational method of worksheets, however, I doubt that I can actually remember anything I learnt from any one of those worksheets. David Didau in his article "Are Worksheets a Waste of Time?" states that worksheets are meaningless work intended to keep students busy without purpose and ask students for very little effort. He believes that work sheets should be eliminated because worksheets are shallow learning.

The good, and bad of worksheets are examined in the article, "Should you use Worksheets in your Classroom?" The "bad" worksheet refers to those that are overly fancy and make no sense to the student. The "good" worksheet refers to those that are a learning tool and not a teaching tool.

Worksheets offer both positive and negative effects on students. If a worksheet is being used to help students transition from simple recall and leads them to being able to create and produce new original work then worksheets are beneficial. However, if worksheets are being used to simply provide something for students to do with no connection to deeper level learning then worksheets need to be a tool of the past.
